The Engelmann Spruce is classified as a long-lived evergreen, with a lifespan that ranges between 300 and 600 years. It takes a long time for the tree to reach it's full height. It ranges in height from 45 to 130 ft and on rare occasion can reach 160 ft. It's trunk will usually grow to about 1 to 2 1/2 ft in diameter. The cones range between 1.5 to 2.5 inches long and they tend to be a shiny brown and elongated with flexible cones scales. The needles are usually very small (.5 to 1.0 inch long) and diamond shaped. They are evenly arranged on the twig. It's hardy to zone 3. It prefers moist, well drained soils but will tolerate drier soil. Adaptable to a wide range of conditions.
