Northern Red Oak is a handsome large tree, distinctly pyramidal in youth, becoming rounded with age. Leaves are quite large, about 5 inches long and 4 inches wide. Sinuses are distinct and lobes are sharply pointed. Leaves are dark green, quite glossy and develop excellent fall colors from orange to various shades of red. Red Oak is native throughout the upper midwest. Transplants fairly well with proper care. Fairly tolerant to a range of soil and site conditions. Requires well drained soil. One of the faster growing oaks. The Red Oak can reach heights of 50 to 70 feet and widths of 40 to 80 feet. It is cold hardy to zone 3.
