The White Mulberry is a fast growing tree. Its fruit is eaten by birds. It produces a white raspberry like fruit that is edible. This species of Mulberry is seldom planted, but when it is planted it's used as a landscaple tree. It provides good shade, along with the fruit that can be used in jams and jellies. The White Mulberry also tolerates drought and urban conditions well along with soils high in salt. The White Mulberry can reach 40-50 feet in height and has a width up to 45 feet. It has a rounded form and it's growth rate is about 18 inches annually. It's cold hardy to zone 4.
Recommended Planting Instructions:
Scarification: Soak in water for 24 hours, change water each day, repeat process daily for 4 days. Stratification: Cold stratify for 90 days. Germination: Sow seed 1/8" deep, tamp soil, mulch seed bed and cover seedbed with shade. Other: Spring sowing of unstratified seed will produce germination the next spring.
